On March 19, 2012, the Governor of Indiana signed into law an amendment to Indiana statute providing that the duty to pay regular (non-educational) child support ceases at age 19 instead of age 21, effective July 1, 2012. Educational support orders entered after July 1, 2012 can extend beyond age 19 but they must be requested prior to a child turning age 19. A child who is receiving child support under an order issued before July 1, 2012, will still be eligible to file a petition for educational support until the child becomes 21 years of age. Stay tuned for further reports on what this new amendment means to Hoosier families.
